Motion, position and distance sensing: PIR occupancy detectors, ultrasonic and time-of-flight rangefinders, accelerometers and gyroscopes, rotary encoders and magnetic reed switches. Ultrasonic is cheap and unbothered by daylight; time-of-flight is smaller and far more precise up close.
